- INSTALLATION
- ────────────
-
- I. TO INSTALL WYWA
-
- 1. WYWA.ZIP is the container file for the WYWA files. If you
- have run an UnZip extraction procedure previously on hard disk
- then move WYWA.ZIP and all extracted file to a diskette, set
- your work directory to that device, and go to step 5.
-
- 2. Copy WYWA.ZIP to a diskette. This creates your backup copy.
- The diskette also serves as the work device for installation.
-
- 3. Set your working device to the drive used in the previous step
- with the diskette containing WYWA.ZIP in that drive. Usually
- this wil be A: or B:
-
- 4. UnZip the WYWA files using PKUNZIP (c) or one of its variants.
-
- 5. Read WYWA.DOC
-
- 6. Type INSTALL then press the Enter Key to start the installation.
-
- 7. Re-start your PC.
-
- 8. To run, type WYWA then press the Enter key.
-
-
-
-
- The INSTALL Procedure
- ─────────────────────
-
- INSTALL will ask you a series of questions. WYWA wants to
- be installed on device C: INSTALL wants to create a directory and
- name it WYWA on that device. INSTALL may want to append some
- commands to Autoexec.Bat and Config.Sys, but will not insist upon
- it. WYWA require these modifications to operate correctly. If you
- do not want INSTALL to do so at this time you must manually edit
- those files and include the commands INSTALL displays. Passwords
- are used by WYWA. You will be asked to enter a primary password
- and then asked to verify it. The same request is also standard for
- the alternate password. Also requested is an "Owner Name". This is
- the name which will be displayed on screen when the NOTICE area is
- enabled.
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- Page 4
-
-
-
-
-
- Passwords
- ─────────
- Passwords are required for all functions except for posting
- messages. Two passwords are defined to provide flexibility in
- using WYWA.
-
- The primary password allows all privileges. The alternate
- password allows limited privileges. When modifying passwords,
- protection may be bypassed by simply pressing the Enter key
- without entering a password. This option should be restricted to
- use in secure locations such as a home office where there is no
- possibility of intrusion since it allows anyone access and control
- of WYWA. The primary password is designed for use by the person
- who's name appears on the NOTICE banner of WYWA and provides
- complete control of WYWA. The Alternative password allows a
- secretary or staff member access to WYWA on the owner's behalf.
- Alternate access allows those who know this password permission
- to check for new messages, modify the NOTICE banner, and deactivate
- WYWA. If you want to read only new messages use the alternate
- password to save time, bypass all other messages. Consult Features
- on Page 2 for additional details.
-
-
-
- The NOTICE Area
- ───────────────
- The NOTICE area is the highlighted area at the top of the WYWA
- screen in which messages may be placed and displayed and which
- indicate: (1) the owner's location and (2) expected time of return.
- If notices are not active, the WYWA banner is displayed in place of
- the a notice.
-
- Whenever a PC on which WYWA in installed is booted, a check
- is performed to determine if the NOTICE area is active. A count
- of "New" i.e. unread messages is also performed at that time.
-
- If a message has been entered in the NOTICE area, WYWA is
- executed and will be placed in active mode, displaying the WYWA
- menu in preparation to accept instructions. If no instruction is
- typed within 10 seconds, Screen Saver mode is activated and
- remains in effect until interrupted by pressing any key, at which
- time the WYWA menu is re-displayed. Screen Saver mode is
- activated whenever appropriate and is can be recognized by the
- "While You Were Away" banner traversing an otherwise blank screen.
-
- At boot time If the NOTICE is not active but new messages are
- detected, a short audible tone is sounded simultaneously with a one
- line display in the form of "WYWA: ß new messages" where ß represents
- the count of new messages.
-
-
-
-
-
- Page 5
-
-
-
-
-
-
- To enter a NOTICE press the "S" (Set sign-out Notice) key
- when the WYWA menu is displayed, type the message and end by
- pressing the Enter key. The NOTICE banner and contents are
- deleted by pressing "S" key and then pressing the Enter key
- twice, once for each field in the NOTICE banner.

- The MENU
- ────────
-
- When WYWA is started a menu is displayed. If a notice has
- been previously entered it will be displayed. If there are new
- messages the count of new messages will be displayed.
-
-
- The menu allows a choice of five selections plus an exit to DOS.
-
- (1) Take a Message. You will be presented a form with seven
- fields. After all fields have been entered you are then
- given the opportunity to change any of them, to cancel the
- message or to accept the message.
-
- (2) Read Messages. No accesss is allowed without a password.
- If repeated non-valid passwords are tried, WYWA will refuse
- to allow reading of messages and password changing for the
- next five minutes and will announce "Option Not Available"
- during this period if these options are selected.
-
- The entry of the Alternate password allows reading of New
- messages only. You might give your secretary this password
- or you may wish to give it to a staff member to check for
- messages for you if you call in to check for messages. In the
- latter case you might want to change the Alternate password
- when you return to your office if it has been compromised.
-
- The Primary password allows access to all messages. This is
- the access mode which allows deletion of messages. Once a
- "New" message is viewed via Primary password its status
- becomes "Read" and is no longer selected when the Alternate
- password is submitted in response to a user request to read
- messages.
-
- (3) Change Alternate Password. The Primary password is required
- to make this modification and is accomplished in a manner
- similar to that used in the INSTALL procedure.
-
- (4) Change Primary Password. Again, the Primary password is
- required to make this modification and is also accomplished
- in a manner similar to that used in the INSTALL procedure.
-
- (5) Set Sign-out Notice. Password is required. This function
- allows you to specify your location in the first field
- (Am at:) and your anticipated date/time of return in the
- second field (Return). When you return to your office select
- this option and delete the notice by pressing the Enter key
- when the cursor is at the beginning of each field.
-
- (6) Exit to DOS. Password required only if the NOTICE area is
- active. The NOTICE area is active if it contains information.
- (Pressing the Enter key also exits to DOS.)

-
- Miscellaneous
- ─────────────
-
- It is well known among those in the electronics industry that
- damage to modern solid state electronics occurs most often during
- the power up cycle and less often when left "on line". By
- reducing this "Power Up Shock" your system should stay healthier
- and last longer. For those who are concerned with the cost for
- electricity: a computer with a 200 Watt power supply requires
- about 15¢ a day in energy costs. During warm weather the heat
- produced by your computer will increase this cost by about 5¢ a
- day if the computer is located in air conditioned space, due to
- thermal load. It is suggested that you power up just once a day
- and leave your PC powered up during the normal business day.
- WYWA will then be immediately available to take messages and to
- be able to advise all callers of your whereabouts in addition to
- extending the life of your PC.
-
-
- Since WYWA allows passwords up to 20 characters you may want
- to use "Pass Phrases"; you will have a more secure system if you
- do so. Be sure to use something which is meaningful to you, but
- not a commonly used phrase nor one that you often use. To provide
- greater security passwords should be routinely changed. Many
- security conscious sites require changes at 30 day intervals.
-
-
- You may wish to leave messages to yourself. One reason might
- be as a reminder for you to do something in the future. Another
- reason might be that you may occasionally want to provide more
- information that can be contained in the NOTICE area. Merely add
- "See Message" to the notice line then enter a message such as "If
- John Gower calls . . . " or "The following is my itinerary while
- in Europe". If you use these methods do NOT enter the Primary
- password to read messages until you have returned from your trip.
- Once new messages are viewed using the Primary password their
- status becomes "Read" and are no longer visible to anyone using
- the Alternate password, and we want the message to remain "New"
- during the period you will be absent.
-
-
- After 10 seconds of inactivity, while the menu is displayed
- WYWA will go into Screen Saver mode. This mode is recognized by
- a screen display which is blank except for the phrase "While You
- Were Away..." in various colors, traversing the monitor screen.
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- Page 8
-
-
-
-
-
-
- A two way encryption is used by WYWA, it is intended to
- prevent all but the most determined intruder from breaking the
- code and deciphering your messages. While not at the cutting
- edge of cryptography it should provide sufficient security for
- all but the most sensitive installations.
-
-
- Data corruption is minimized by opening files only when they
- are being accessed. Although more program and system overhead is
- incurred this way, it results in increased file protection. If
- you have completed any WYWA function and are at the menu screen
- you may safely shut off the power, with no concern for the WYWA
- system. While this may be of no consequence to WYWA, other
- processes on your PC may not be as tolerant and you will probably
- want to perform a more orderly shutdown by exiting to your DOS
- prompt and then turning the power off. This is especially true if
- servers are employed on your system or multi-processing is used.
-
-
- After the owner has read a message, it should be either deleted
- or printed unless there is compelling reason to retain it in the WYWA
- data base in its encrypted form. Retaining old messages within WYWA
- is inefficient and wastes time and resources.
-
- If a hard copy of a message is required, simply press the
- Print Screen key on your keyboard.
-
-
- The header block (From: ... Tel. No.) auto-cases its input.
- The first character of each word is capitalized, all others are
- lower cased. Override on a character by character basis is allowed.
- Entering a ~ prior to any character forces lower casing for that
- character. Entering a ^ prior to the character forces upper casing.

-
- WYWA version E1.0 is Shareware. U. S. Copyright laws protects
- shareware as it does any copyrighted work and the copyright holder
- retains all rights to the work. Shareware authors are usually
- professional programmers, often they are authors of some of the
- commercial software marketed by large publishing houses. The
- difference is in the method the authors elect to offer a particular
- software. The shareware author specifically grants the right to copy
- and distribute his software for evaluation at no cost to the end user
- relying on the substance and quality of the product to motivate you
- to register with the author. Any cost the end user may have paid
- for the shareware copy goes to those distributing the shareware
- and not to the author.
-
- Shareware is a distribution channel employed to market software
- not a type of software. Shareware operates on a try-before-you-buy
- concept. If you decide after an ample evaluation period (for WYWA
- this is 30 days) not to use the product you do not pay for testing
- it nor are you required to purchase the program. If you try a
- shareware program and intend to continue using it, you are expected
- to register and pay the registration fee. Often additional items are
- included in the registered copy which are not in the shareware copy.

- Out Of Environmental Space
-
- Means:
- The current size of environmental space is too small to
- accommodate the WYWA environmental variable.
-
- Solution:
- Increase the size of environmental space.
- Edit the CONFIG.SYS file and look for a line which begins with
- COMMAND. If found then check for the occurrence of /e: or /E:
- followed by a decimal value, such as /e:256 or /E:512.
- Determine your case and follow the appropriate action from the
- following chart.
-
- Case Action
- ──── ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
- A. COMMAND ... /E:nnn is located: (nnn represents a value)
- - or -
- COMMAND ... /e:nnn is located: (nnn represents a value)
- Increase the value by 32 (e.g. 512 is now 544)
-
- B. COMMAND command without the /E: or /e: is located:
- Append /E:288 to the end of the COMMAND statement.
-
- C. COMMAND statement is not found:
- Append the following line: COMMAND /SHELL=COMMAND.SYS /E:256
